Feeding Questions

What are the benefits of feeding my dog seaweed?

Seaweed contains bioactive compounds like fucoidan and laminarin, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. These compounds can help support your dog's immune system, improve gut health, and may even reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.

How do I incorporate seaweed into my dog's diet?

There is many ways to feed your dog seaweed. For example sprinkle it on the dogs food, mix it with kefir, or freeze it into ice cubes. Check out our Feeding Ideas page for further information on this.

Is it okay to split the daily dose of seaweed over two meals?

You can either feed the recommended daily amount with one meal or split it over multiple meals. If it is over multiple meals then remember that the recommended amount is per day.

Is it safe to feed my dog seaweed?

Yes, in general, seaweed is safe for dogs, though there is some dogs that have thyroid issues that it is not safe for. This is due to naturally occuring iodine in seaweed. Whilst iodine is an essential micronutrient for health and wellbeing to much of it can have a negative effect. If your dog has any thyroid issues we recommend consulting your veterinary practitioner. Also dogs can sometimes be allergic to seaweed, due to this we always recommend starting off with a small amount and working up to the recommended dosage over a couple of weeks.

My dog will not eat the seaweed?

If this is happening we recommend starting off with a very small amount and slowly increasing it to the recommended amount over a few weeks. Always remember to not act differently when feeding the seaweed. Otherwise you can check out some of our Feeding Ideas to see if this makes a difference. Finally if they still won't eat it then contact us directly to avail of our Money Back Guarantee.

How much seaweed should I give my dog?

The recommended amount of seaweed to give your dog will depend on their size, age, and health status. On the product packaging and in the images section on each product page you can find this information. As a general rule, it's best to start with a small amount and gradually increase the dosage while monitoring your dog for any adverse reactions. It's also important to follow the dosage instructions provided on the supplement packaging.

Issues with Feeding Seaweed to Dogs

Can dogs be allergic to seaweed?

Yes, dogs can be allergic to seaweed. If your dog has a history of food allergies or sensitivities, it's important to introduce seaweed slowly and monitor for any adverse reactions like vomiting, diarrhea, or skin rashes.

Are there any risks associated with feeding my dog seaweed?

While seaweed is generally considered safe for dogs, there are some risks to be aware of. Some types of seaweed may contain high levels of iodine, which can be harmful in large amounts. Also some dogs that have thyroid issues should not eat seaweed as it contains naturally occurring iodine. Additionally, consuming too much seaweed can lead to gastrointestinal upset and even blockages in some cases, though this is associated with dried seaweed eaten whole, not dried seaweed that has been milled. Finally some dogs can be allergic to seaweed. Due to these issues we always recommend starting off with a small amount of seaweed and working up to the recommended dosage over a couple of weeks. It's important to consult with your veterinarian and introduce seaweed slowly to avoid any potential risks.
